Where’s the Sun? (2021)

“Despite knowing they won’t be here for long, they still choose to live their brightest lives”, is my favorite quote from Rupi Kaur’s poetry book, "The Sun and Her Flowers". When I read this quote of Kaur’s depiction of sunflowers, I see myself. In my piece, I have attached human features to the lemons and sunflowers in an absurd and contradictory composition. As sunflowers look toward the sun for their source of life, we humans similarly tend to search for a source of light, a motivation, to get through our days. From my childhood memories to who I am now, all things that are yellow including these sunflowers and lemons, have long been a source of brightness to me, which is why I incorporated it into the painting.
