Umma (2021)

This piece "Umma” which means “mother” in Korean, is inspired by Jenny Saville’s drawing Mother and Children (1970). With the dual figures and locations of the mother side by side, I attempt to portray the life of a working mother versus the stereotypical motherly figure at home. Although my mother had always dreamt of being a stay-at-home mother, the need to provide for me had forced her into a busy life where our relationship grew further apart. Through the movement and division of the figures within the piece, I attempt to express this disassociation with one another between the daughter and mother figure.
