Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, But Words Will Never Hurt Me: Typography Only (2021)

This piece is a typography/graphic illustration of a collection of English idioms. I printed out the initial design then utilized folding, cutting, and ripping to add a greater sense of depth and composition. The saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” are plastered across, symbolizing that any individual can have the power to ignore hatred and bigotry in the world. One of many postmodern complications that I find perplexing is our generation’s sensitivity towards labeling. Perhaps this phenomenon reveals more about human fragility than concerns for inclusivity.
