Brace Face (2021)

One of my biggest insecurities growing up was my crooked teeth. As I hit puberty, I finally got braces to fix my smile and it gave me a boost of self-confidence. Contrary to my friends with braces who would often cover their mouths when they laughed, I wanted to show my braces off as if it were an accessory. Through this artwork, I wanted to represent braces as something rather aesthetic and not something to hide. I used bright colors to capture the emotions of a young girl and presented it in the style of pop art, presenting a challenge to normalize the anomalous.
