Birth (2021)

Every parent, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or culture, wishes nothing but happiness and success for their children. “Dol” or “doljanchi” is a Korean tradition where families celebrate their baby’s first birthday. One of the special events that take place during the birthday celebration is called “doljabi” where the baby picks one out of five to six various objects laid out in front of him or her. Whatever object that is picked out is said to represent the baby’s future career and blessing. In my piece, I drew the three most popular objects that most parents hope their babies pick: a stethoscope that represents a job as a doctor, a paintbrush that represents intellect, and rice that represents good health.
